Let’s say that it’s a great year for agriculture. It’s going to rain a lot, the temperature will be perfect, and you want to take advantage of this opportunity. You will only make money if you know what kind of fruit and vegetables people are looking to buy. You may grow beautiful tomatoes, but if people are only interested in apples, your products will be worthless.
This having been said, the following business ideas have been analyzed by people around the world, and have been deemed the best opportunities for 2018. So read through the article, choose the one(s) that you like, or that you are good at, and start making money. This can be your year!

Also, keep in mind that you don’t have to actually know anything about repairing bikes. Once you have the bicycle in storage, you can hire someone to repair them and pay him by the hour. After he is done, just lock up the storage box and forget about it until it’s time to give the bikes back to your clients.
You won’t need a lot of money in order to start the business due to the fact that most of the clients will agree to pay you in advance. You can store the first 7-8 bikes at your home, and use the money for storing and repairing those in order to rent a storage box.

In time, you will be able to find work with an advertising agency.
- Become a Notary Public
Notary publics are state officers who are authorized to witness and attest to the signing of various legal documents. However, in order to become one, you may be required to pass an exam, and also a background check. These procedures do not cost a lot of money and the exam is relatively easy to pass.
This having been said, you should keep in mind that this activity won’t bring you a lot of money. Most of the time what you will earn will seem more like a secondary source of income.
- Personal Concierge
Becoming a personal concierge is a great choice for anyone who can solve problems fast and efficiently. Your clients will expect you to do things fast, without asking them for help or a lot of clarification.

For example, if the owners go away for an extended period of time, you may be required to either make regular checks on the property in order to ensure that everything is in order. However, some people may even ask you to actually move into the building until they get back.

- Open a Small Engine Repair Shop
You can learn the basics at most community colleges, and once you feel that you’re ready you can open a repair shop and fix things like riding lawn mowers, generators, garden tools, and chainsaws.
If taking engine-repair courses at a nearby community college isn’t an option, you can look for a part-time job at a local repair shop, in order to learn what you need in order to get started.
The only factor that will limit your ability to earn money is the space that you have at your disposal. While you will usually work on garden tools and other very small devices, you may have clients come to you with snowmobiles and ATVs. So it’s a good idea to expand when you have the chance. In this business, more space means more money.

The first thing that you will have to do is to learn as much as you can about this field, including the various products that our clients could use. This having been said, you should avoid affiliating yourself with a company or product. The best course of action is to always recommend the best product for each of your clients.
- Tax Preparer
You should be able to easily find courses that will teach you everything that you need to know in order to be a tax preparer online, as well as seminars and training offered by various companies. While this job may be complicated, there is a lot of educational support and is worth the trouble. There are a lot of individual and businesses that don’t mind spending a couple of hundred dollars per year in order to have someone prepare their taxes in advance and look out for tax breaks or tax burdens.
This business is also extremely easy to scale up. You simply need to take on more clients. The more you can work, the more money you can make. After you’ve made a name for yourself, you can hire a few other people to help you, and create a fully-fledged company.
- Work as a Taxidermist
While some may be a bit put off by this business, taxidermy pays pretty well. Also, the main misconception about this business is that taxidermists always work, (or have to work) with live animals which they must preserve. In reality, this business also includes projects where the specialist must recreate a certain specimen using only artificial materials. Preserved specimens do bring more money than artificial ones, however, the business itself is growing in popularity.
You will need training, and a variety of materials, some of which are more expensive than others. Luckily, most clients will pay you a lot more than what those materials are worth. If you move fast, you can capitalize on a growing trend of preserving or recreating pets for their owners. Now, while there is a chance that you may have a rare book that is worth a couple hundred dollars, the most probable scenario is that you have a lot of books that are worth a couple of bucks each. While it may not seem like much, you can always look for people who are giving away books on Craigslist. Once you get the books from them, do a bit of research and figure out what each of them is worth, and then sell them. If you’re lucky enough to come across baseball cards, maps, postcards, or magazines, then you may want to have the ones that look unique appraised.
- Become a Wedding Planner
Wedding planners are very well paid, and the activity itself isn’t difficult. You will have to learn about the current trends in terms of everything wedding-related. After every decision has been made, you will have to organize the whole event and to ensure that everything from music, and food, to seating, is in order. In the end, you will be responsible for the overall success of the wedding.

While it may take a while until you build your customer base, once people start recommending you, business will be great.
For another source of income, you can also offer to install appliances into your clients’ homes, and also in newly built homes.

Another way you can make money is by getting in touch with companies that need someone to train their employees. Microsoft Windows and MacOS are very different, and the people know how to use one, don’t know anything about the other. When a company decides to move from one operating system to another, they need someone to teach them how to use the new devices.
Either way, you will need certification. While seniors may come to you to learn even without it, younger individuals and companies will want to see some kind of proof that you really know what you are doing.
- Become a Desktop Publisher
If you’ve got a computer and an internet connection, then you can become a desktop publisher. In this business, you will have to create newsletters, magazines, books, and other materials that your clients will use. This business is extremely easy to develop and the only expense is the amount of money that you spend on software.
- Start a Fence Installation Business
Anyone and everyone needs fences. Homes, farms, factories, all need fences. You can not only make money by installing them, but also by repairing old ones. Also, even the ones that you install won’t last forever, and you will be called to replace or repair them if anything happens.
You will have to learn to work with both iron and wood, in order to satisfy your clients, and there may also be moments when you will need to be creative in order to design more interesting fences.
The best part is that you will never run out of work, and most of the materials can be recycled or found at salvage yards.

Also, you get to decide what projects you want to work on, and you set your fee. Graphic design pays really well at the moment, and the only investment that you may have to make is on the design software. As for learning the required skills, there are many videos online that will teach you everything from the basics to more advanced techniques.
- Offer a Gift Basket Service
While they are a bit old-fashioned, most people still use gift basket services if they have access to them. Start by designing a few baskets and including them into a portfolio. If you have already designed or sell a product that would go nicely into these baskets, then include it. Also, make sure that you also allow your clients to create their own gift baskets. It’s great to have a few pre-made ones on hand, however, most people will appreciate having the ability to truly make their gift unique.
- Start a Graffiti Removal Service
Graffiti is a problem that many people would pay a lot of money to have fixed. You can either become a home-based hairstylist and have people come to you in order to get their hair done, or you can look for work in a salon. This line of work is largely based on word of mouth, so if you do a great job, you will have more customers. Also, if you have or are interested in undergoing cosmetology training, this will help you offer some extra services that will bring you more money.
- Start an Herbal Farm Stand
You can approach this business idea in multiple ways. First of all, you can sell life plants in pots. You basically need to water them each day and then sell them to your customers. Alternatively, you can cut the herbs and sell them in bunches, or dry them up and sell them in packs. This choice should be determined by both the amount of time that you have, and also by what kind of customer you want to target.
For example, potted plants will sell better to people who want to break off a few leaves from the plant to put them into the food that they’re cooking. After that, they will wait for the plant to grow back, before taking a few more leaves. However, there will always be some who do not want to wait for the plant to grow back and will prefer to buy fresh herbs tied in bunches or dried ones.
Also, by selling potted plants you literally only need to water them every day and sell them. Drying them requires more space, a lot of natural light, and a more patience.

Also, the courses aren’t cheap. Participating in courses and a certification program would go up to about $5,000. It may seem like a lot, but the amount of money that you would be making after this would help you cover your expenses in 4-6 weeks.
- Offer a Moving Service
People are constantly moving, and every time they find a new house, they are looking for someone to pay in order to do the heavy lifting. You will only need a team, and a van, at least when it comes to moving services across short distances. While you can make 2 or 3 trips between the old house and the new one, when they are only a couple of miles apart, clients will want to have all their belongings moved at the same time when it comes larger distances. Luckily, you can always rent a larger vehicle for those trips.
As far as advertising your services goes, the best course of action is to put ads around town. Most people call the companies that they see around town, not the ones that they find on the internet.
- Give Music Lessons
As you would expect, you will need experience and training in order to give music lessons. Also, depending on your proficiencies, you can either teach one or more instruments, musical theory, or canto.
Once you have decided what services you want to offer, you will have to establish if you want the students to come to you or if you can go to them. Lastly, you should also decide if you want to teach individuals or to teach classes. If the second option is a good fit for you, then you will also have to find an appropriate space to hold the lessons.
Advertise your services online, and also put up ads near schools. As schools start slowly ignoring the importance of art and music classes, students and parents alike may be tempted to pursue these things someplace else.
- Work as a Photographer

Also, you don’t need courses in order to be a good photographer. If you start small and slowly work your way up, you will become better and better, as you get more experienced.
As a word of warning, do not spend money on expensive equipment if you are just starting out. Professional equipment won’t count for much if you don’t have the experience required to use it.
- Become a Website Developer
Depending on how you want to work, you may need to take courses, to have a bit of experience, or you may even need a degree.
If you have none of the above, you should probably start by looking for online guides in order to learn the basics. Once you know how to create a basic website, you can start working as a freelancer. - Offer Bed & Breakfast
If you live alone and have one or more spare rooms in your home, then you may want to consider monetizing that extra space. You can rent the extra space for one or more days, and charge per day. You can earn more money if you live near a touristic area, a sports stadium, or an area where other important, popular activities take place.
This having been said, you should have separate bathrooms for yourself, and for the ones that you would welcome into your home, and also keep the place perfectly clean. If you rent a room during the weekend, you can earn close to $15,000 per year, without having to actively work for them.
- Christmas Tree Sales
If you live in the right climate and have a large property, you can start growing Christmas trees. These sell extremely well during the holiday season and can be sold in two ways. You can either sell them yourself, directly to customers, or you can sell them to a retailer and make money that way.
Considering what Christmas trees usually go for, you would earn more money by selling them yourself, however, this would take more time and would keep you busy during the holiday season.
- Offer Day Care
Child care continues to grow in demand in the United States, as more and more parents have too little free time to take care of their children, over the course of the week. Luckily, day care services are a solution that parents everywhere are happy to pay for. You will need licensing in order to start this business, but once you have it, the job itself isn’t difficult. If you already have children, then you’re used to taking care of them, and your kids may even enjoy having someone their age to play with.
Also, most of the time, parents will drop the children in the morning, and come to pick them up when they finish work, so you won’t have to taxi them around town.
- Offer Pet Sitting Services
Similar to babysitters, people who offer pet sitting services are required to take care of a family’s pets while their owners are away. In some cases you may even be required to spend the night at your client’s house, however, most of them will ask you only to spend a few hours with the pets in order to feed and groom them, and then to repeat the same process the next day.
