Citation Generator
Build APA 7 and MLA 9 references for books, websites and journals. Everything happens on this page, in your browser — nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
Your reference
Always check the result against your style guide: italics for book and journal titles, DOIs for journal articles, and access dates are details this quick builder simplifies.
How this tool works
A reference list entry is a small machine for finding a source again: author, date, title, and where it lives. APA and MLA arrange the same parts in different orders and punctuation, which is why mixing the two styles in one bibliography is so easy to do and so easy for a marker to spot.
Using it, step by step
- Choose the style your course requires — APA 7 for most sciences and social sciences, MLA 9 for most humanities.
- Choose the source type, then fill the fields with exactly what the title page or web page shows.
- Generate, copy, and paste into your reference list — then sort the whole list alphabetically by author surname.
- Proofread the pasted entry once: italics do not survive plain-text copying, so restore them where the style requires.
Where it stops
This builder covers the common core of each style. It does not handle DOIs, edition statements, translators, editors of anthology chapters, or access dates for unstable web pages, and in-text citations are a separate job. Your course style guide wins every disagreement with this page.
