Word Counter for Essays
Count words, sentences and reading time in a draft as you type. Everything happens on this page, in your browser — nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How this tool works
Word counts look trivial until an essay limit is at stake: counters disagree about hyphenated words, numbers and em-dashes, and the disagreement always seems to surface at 2 a.m. before a deadline. This counter uses the simple, defensible rule — a word is a run of characters separated by whitespace — and says so.
Using it, step by step
- Paste your draft in, or write directly in the box; counting is live.
- Check the figure your assignment actually asks for — some limits count the bibliography, some do not.
- Glance at the sentence count and average length if the draft feels heavy: long averages are usually the culprit.
- Use the reading-time figure if the essay will be read aloud or presented.
Where it stops
This page's rule may differ by a handful of words from your word processor's, which treats some punctuation differently. For a hard limit with penalties, leave a small margin under the cap rather than arguing over three words at the boundary.
