Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, simplified. Everything happens on this page, in your browser — nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How this tool works
Fractions frighten students out of proportion to their difficulty, because four operations follow four different-looking rules. Underneath, there is one idea — a fraction is a division that has not happened yet — and one habit that fixes most errors: simplify at the end, every time.
Using it, step by step
- Enter the top and bottom of the first fraction, choose the operation, then enter the second fraction.
- Read the result three ways: as a simplified fraction, as a mixed number when it is bigger than one, and as a decimal.
- Use the working note under the result to check the method against your homework's expected steps.
- For a negative result, keep the sign on the numerator — the page already moves it there for you.
Where it stops
The calculator accepts whole numbers for numerators and denominators, including a denominator of 1 for whole numbers. It will not simplify a fraction with a zero denominator, because that expression has no meaning to simplify.
